In 2025, especially around October, Apple terminated or restricted a very large number of developer accounts used across the sideloading community. Thousands of signing certificates were affected.
This was not an intentional revocation by AppTesters. Apple controls developer-account approval and termination, certificate validity, UDID eligibility, and its enforcement systems. When Apple terminated the associated accounts, certificates connected to those accounts stopped working.
How AppTesters responded
AppTesters had historically honored free replacements for normal revocations since 2022. When the 2025 event occurred, AppTesters initially attempted to follow the same approach and replace affected certificates without charge.
The scale was different from an ordinary revocation. Issuing a very large number of replacement certificates and developer accounts rapidly resulted in additional accounts being terminated. At the same time, Apple's approvals for new developer accounts became stricter and slower. That reduced the safe capacity available for processing thousands of replacements at once.
What changed for the current recovery cycle
AppTesters rebuilt its current setup and began managing developer-account capacity more cautiously. Since January 2026, AppTesters has delivered 1,500+ certificates through this setup with no revocations reported so far.
That performance is encouraging, but it is not an absolute future guarantee. Apple remains in control of its developer systems.
For certificates affected by the extraordinary 2025 event, the current recovery cycle uses discounted replacement pricing: $12 for Essential, $12.50 for Premium, and $25 for Ultimate. This is not a requirement to repurchase a Lifetime plan at full price. It is a temporary contribution toward new developer-account capacity and replacement issuance.
AppTesters intends normal free replacement handling to resume for ordinary eligible revocations after the exceptional recovery cycle. A future ecosystem-wide event of similar scale may need separate handling.
