Receiving a replacement certificate does not automatically move the data inside your existing sideloaded apps. Data retention depends on the app, bundle identifier, signing configuration, and whether the old app must be removed before the new copy is installed.
Before reinstalling
Back up any information you cannot afford to lose. Depending on the app, this may include:
- An in-app export or backup file
- A supported cloud or account sync
- Files saved to the iOS Files app
- Photos, documents, project files, or game saves exported manually
- App-specific backup instructions from the app developer
Do not assume that an iCloud device backup includes usable data for every sideloaded or modified app.
Installing over the existing app
In some cases, a freshly signed app with the same bundle identifier can install over the existing version and retain its data. This is not guaranteed. Changes to the bundle identifier, application groups, entitlements, or signing configuration can cause iOS to treat the app differently.
If the signer reports a conflict or iOS refuses the update, you may need to remove the old app. Uninstalling normally deletes data stored only inside that app's local container.
After receiving a replacement
- Keep the old app installed while you create a backup.
- Import or select the new certificate in your signer.
- Sign a fresh IPA with the intended bundle identifier and entitlements.
- Attempt the supported update method if the app allows it.
- If a clean reinstall is required, confirm the backup first, remove the old app, install the new copy, and restore data using the app's supported process.
